Booking tips and local rules

Plan the help you want

Once your dates are set, ask providers about availability, delivery coverage, cancellation terms and weather plans. Availability varies by company and season. Confirm your exact rental’s linen inclusions, vendor access, event and golf-cart rules before booking. Arrange deliveries for after check-in unless access has been approved.

Boats and jet skis

North Carolina’s boating education requirement generally applies to operators born on or after January 1, 1988 using a motor of 10 horsepower or more. The law exempts an authorized renter named on a rental agreement; providers may still require a course or set age and operating limits. No one under 14 may operate a personal watercraft, and riders must wear approved life jackets. Confirm the company’s rules for your trip. See the boating education statute and NC Wildlife boating safety rules.

Golf carts

For public roads, confirm you are renting a registered and insured low-speed vehicle, with a licensed driver. LSVs generally use roads posted 35 mph or less, with local and state restrictions. Topsail Beach limits Anderson Boulevard use to crossings and its 25 mph business district. Confirm your route, your home and community’s permission, and any required charging outlet. See Topsail Beach’s LSV rules and North Carolina’s LSV statute.

Fishing licenses

People 16 and older generally need a North Carolina Coastal Recreational Fishing License for recreational coastal fishing. A provider’s blanket captain or blanket vessel license can cover charter passengers; a USCG captain credential alone does not establish that coverage. Ask the charter whether your specific trip is covered. If fishing from the surf, a kayak or a rental boat, check your own license requirement. See NC DEQ recreational licensing and for-hire license coverage.
