Beach Wheelchairs on Topsail Island

All three Topsail towns lend beach wheelchairs, the wide-wheeled kind that roll over soft sand. Surf City will even deliver one to your cottage. Here’s how each program works.

Why it matters

A standard wheelchair stalls in beach sand. These chairs let a grandparent or a guest with limited mobility get to the water’s edge with the family. Supply is small in every town, so reserve or ask as soon as your dates are set. A private option is listed below too.

Programs by town

• Surf CityReserve online up to a month ahead. Weekly reservations March to October; daily loans weekdays 9 to 3. The town delivers to Surf City cottages and picks up later. Request by Thursday for Monday delivery.
• Topsail BeachThree free chairs, first come, first served, from the police department at 820 S. Anderson Blvd. Check out daily and return by 9 p.m.
• North Topsail BeachTwo beach wheelchairs and a beach walker, borrowed through the police department by application.
• Private rentalTopsail Beach Service, in Surf City, lists a beach wheelchair with its delivered beach gear.

Before you book

• Chairs stay within the lending town’s limits, so borrow from the town where you’re staying.
• Surf City lists five accessible beach accesses; North Topsail Beach lists Onslow County accesses #2 and #4.
• Bring a helper: beach wheelchairs are pushed, not self-propelled.
