Kayak and Paddleboard Rentals on Topsail Island
The sound behind Topsail Island is sheltered from the ocean surf, with marsh channels, birds and the occasional dolphin. You can have kayaks and paddleboards delivered to your rental, rent from a shop, or join a guided eco or sunset paddle.
Delivered boats suit sound-front homes, where you can launch near the house. Guided tours launch from their own sites.

How to choose
Guided or on your own?
A guided tour is the easiest way to see the marsh if you’re new to paddling or don’t know the water. Paddle NC’s two-hour eco tours go to the Permuda Island reserve, with a separate sunset tour. Confident paddlers can rent for a few hours or the whole week.
Kayak or paddleboard?
Kayaks are steadier and easier for kids and first-timers, and tandems hold two. Paddleboards take a little balance and are easiest on light-wind mornings. Minimum ages apply for single kayaks and paddleboards at some outfitters.
Delivery and launching
Delivery makes most sense if your rental is on the sound or near a launch. Delivery terms differ by shop: Kingfisher states Surf City and Hampstead, Topsail Surf & Cycle charges for North Topsail Beach, and Drop In delivers free only on rentals of three days or more. Drop In also reminds renters who pick up boats themselves that a kayak must fit inside the vehicle, not on the roof.
Before you book
Wear the life jacket the outfitter provides and check the wind and tide before you go; sound-side conditions change with both, and boat traffic is heavier in the marked channels. The outfitters here launch on the sound side, not into the ocean surf. If you plan to fish from a kayak, anglers 16 and older need a North Carolina Coastal Recreational Fishing License. Where can I launch a kayak on Topsail?
Sound-front rentals often have water access. Otherwise, tours and shop rentals launch from their own sites, such as Paddle NC in North Topsail and the Surf City docks.
Are kayak tours good for kids?
Often, in sheltered sound water on a light-wind day, especially with a guide. Check each outfitter’s minimum age; Paddle NC requires paddlers to be 12 for single kayaks and paddleboards.
When does Paddle NC operate?
Roughly late March to October, daily from late May to Labor Day and weekends in spring and fall.
