Kids climb aboard a real steam locomotive from about 1910 and a red caboose. Inside, push buttons run trains across more than 1,200 feet of model track. The museum’s modelers also once set a Guinness World Record for the longest model train.

Why families go

The model layouts are the star: detailed and interactive, with Thomas the Tank Engine for the youngest fans. Families call it a charming hour or two, and a perfect rainy-day stop. Train-loving grandparents enjoy the history of the Atlantic Coast Line, which was headquartered in Wilmington until 1960. It’s at the north end of the Riverwalk, so it pairs easily with a downtown stroll.
