Missiles and More Museum
From 1946 to 1948, the Navy secretly launched about 200 test rockets from Topsail Island in Operation Bumblebee, work that helped prove the ramjet principle behind supersonic flight. This free museum is in the actual building where the missiles were assembled, with a full-size Talos missile out front.
Why families go
It’s small but packed. Visitors are surprised by how much history the island holds, and the volunteers are friendly and knowledgeable. Kids get a scavenger hunt with prizes that slows them down enough to read the exhibits. It also explains the concrete towers you’ll spot along the island; they were rocket observation stations.
