Carolina Beach State Park
Wild Venus flytraps grow naturally only within about 60 or 70 miles of Wilmington, and here you can see them from an easy half-mile trail. The park also has a 50-foot dune that sailors have used as a river landmark since 1663.
Why families go
Easy trails suit all ages, some are wheelchair-friendly, and spotting a flytrap is a little treasure hunt for kids. The visitor center exhibits are a good first stop, and the marina on the waterway rents paddle craft and bikes. Bring bug spray and sunscreen, because the trails are less shaded than people expect. There’s no ocean beach or swimming in the park itself.
